MINI SQUAD - Lengths

Once swimmers are ready to tackle lengths they will move to the Seals group.

These sessions run during the 40 weeks of Somerset School term time, from 5.30- 6pm on a Sunday evening, please check our calendar page for details. The annual fees are £180 which is split into 12 monthly payments of £15. Swimmers in these groups are registered with Swim England as Cat 1, the £20 fee for this is collected when they initially join the club and then every folowing January. This registratio provides insurance for them to swim at the club.

All fees are collected by direct debit.

To gain their Seal Award swimmers will need to be able to :-

1.Swim 1 length freestyle continuously with obvious attempts to breath to the side without holding the side or rope 

2.Swim 1 length back stroke continuously without holding the side or rope 

3.Swim underwater for 10m 

4.Tread water for 10 seconds using arms and legs

5.Swim 15m butterfly kick, arms by side

6.Streamlined push and glide from wall – then complete 1 length freestyle body position kick (one arm extended out in front, one arm by side)

7.Streamlined push and glide from wall – then complete 1 length back stroke kick

8.Swim 1 length using frog breaststroke type action of arms and legs

To gain their Dolphin Award swimmers will need to be able to :-

1.Swim 2 lengths freestyle continuously with obvious attempts to breath to the side without holding the side or rope 

2.Swim 2 lengths back stroke continuously without holding the side or rope

3.Swim underwater for 15m

4.Complete a sitting dive

5.Swim 1 length butterfly kick, arms by side

6.Streamlined push and glide from wall – then complete 2 lengths freestyle body position kick (one arm extended out in front, one arm by side). Swap leading arm for second length.

7.Streamlined push and glide from wall – then complete 2 lengths back stroke kick

8.Swim 2 lengths using frog breaststroke type action of arms and legs

To gain their Killer Whale Award swimmers will need to be able to :-

1.Swim 4 lengths freestyle continuously with obvious attempts to breath to the side without holding the side or rope

2.Swim 4 lengths back stroke continuously without holding the side or rope

3.Swim underwater for 20m

4.Complete a dive from standing

5.Swim 1 length butterfly kick on back – arms by side or streamline

6.Jump in from side, return to surface and tread water for 30 seconds

7.Swim 1 length of legal breaststroke – correct timing and 2 handed touch to finish

8.Swim 1 length of single arm butterfly

9.Complete a surface dive and retrieve item from bottom of pool (deep end)

10.Demonstrate a freestyle tumbleturn
