Mini Squad - Widths

A minimum requirement to join our Starfish group is that applicants are at least 5 years old and they can move through the water unaided.

These sessions run during the 40 weeks of Somerset School term time, from 5- 5.30pm on a Sunday evening, please check our calendar page for details. The annual fees are £180 which is split into 12 monthly payments of £15. Swimmers in these groups are registered with Swim England as Cat 1, the £20 fee for this is collected when they initially join the club and then every following January. This registration provides insurance for them to swim at the club.

All fees are collected by direct debit.

To gain their Starfish Award swimmers will need to be able to :-

1.Swim 1 width on front – touching bottom or having support only once 

2.Swim 1 width on back – touching bottom or having support only once  

3.Float on back for 10 seconds  

4.Retrieve an item from the bottom of pool unassisted 

5.Blow bubbles in the water with head fully submerged 

6.Kick 1 width on front using board – completely unassisted without touching bottom or holding side.

To gain their Tadpole Award swimmers will need to be able to :-

1.Swim 1 width front crawl unassisted 

2.Swim 1 width back crawl unassisted 

3.Float on back for 10 seconds, roll onto front float, roll back onto back float 

4.Bob up and down in water 5 times (head completely submerged), exhale air underwater creating visible bubbles 

5.Jump in from side and retrieve an item from bottom of pool unassisted 

6.Kick 1 width on front continuously, arms by side 

7.Kick 1 width on back continuously, arms by side

To gain their Minnow Award swimmers will need to be able to :-

1.Swim 2 widths front crawl unassisted, turn on the wall with no more than 5 second pause 

2.Swim 2 widths back crawl unassisted, turn on the wall with no more than 5 second pause 

3.Front crawl kick holding side, arms extended and face submerged – complete 5 breaths to left side and 5 breaths to right side – returning face to water after each breath 

4.Retrieve an item from bottom of pool (deep end) 

5.Jump in, come to surface and tread water for 3 seconds using arms and legs 

6.Streamlined push and glide from wall – then complete 2 widths freestyle body position kick (one arm extended out in front, one arm by side) 

7.Streamlined push and glide from wall – then complete 2 widths backstroke kick in streamline position 

8.Swim 1 width using frog breaststroke type action of arms and legs
