Three of Frome Water Polo Club’s Men’s team were selected to play for Somerset in the recent South West Region Inter County tournament held at Millfield School.
Pictured left to right Brad Poole, Matt Hann & Fraser Thomson, who, along with players from Taunton and Weston Super Mare including ex-Frome player Martyn Hodges, made up the team to face Devon, Dorset & Gloucester.
The Somerset team knew they had tough matches ahead with the teams from Devon and Gloucester including players from the top clubs in the Polo League. The first match against Devon was close with Somerset just securing victory by 9 goals to 8. Next up came Dorset and Somerset got into their stride, winning 6-4. Finally they faced Gloucester. With fatigue setting in for all teams, it was a test of stamina to see who could find that something extra and Frome’s, Hann, with his swimming background enjoyed the space in the water at Millfield, scoring a hat-trick to help seal the 15-7 victory, Poole was Somerset’s second highest scorer overall with 6 goals and Thomson scored 1. Their efforts saw the trophy awarded to Somerset for the first time in many years.
After beating Bradford on Avon recently by a large margin, Frome water polo club travelled to Marlborough college on Saturday afternoon to play in the final of the Bristol and West Handicap Cup.
Frome have had quite a bit of success in this cup and have been runners up several times over the last few years. The other finalists, Bristol Harlequins were to start the game with a 13 goal lead based on current form and league position.
The game started well for Frome as Martyn Hodges scored in the first few seconds, Frome then went on to score twice more in the first quarter. The goal scoring then slowed a little during the middle stages of the game and after conceding a few goals to Bristol we still had a 9 goal difference at half time which by any team's standards was probably too big an ask on the day.
Although the final result was disappointing for Frome the team played very well and it was a great day out. Next year hopefully we will be picking up the winner's trophy instead of the runners up one.....
